School’s out for summer! The 2017-2018 school year was an exciting time for Save the Children Action Network’s (SCAN) Student Ambassador Program. This outstanding network of passionate high school and college students engaged their classmates and communities about early childhood education and maternal, newborn and child survival throughout the year. They went the extra mile to empower those around them to advocate for these issues at the local, state and national levels.
Let’s celebrate our Student Ambassadors and everything they do to make the world a better place for kids. Here are some highlights from the year!
Recruiting Activists and Spreading the Word
Student Ambassadors kicked off the school year by participating in campus club fairs and other outreach events to recruit new members and garner support for our campaigns.
Who Doesn’t Love a Good Parade?!
Student Ambassadors love a good parade, especially during homecoming! These SCAN clubs spread the word about being a voice for kids while walking in their schools’ respective homecoming parades.
Ending Preventable Child Deaths is Within Our Reach
In October, Student Ambassadors participated in our week of action to rally support for the Reach Every Mother and Child Act (H.R. 4022/S.1730). Various activities were united by photos with our oversized sign to represent all of the communities across the county that believe ending preventable maternal and child deaths is within our reach.
Student Ambassadors Have a Heart
To kick off the spring semester, Student Ambassadors made valentines to deliver to their members of Congress urging them to “Have a Heart, Invest in Kids.”
Lobbying Lawmakers Like a Pro
Throughout the school year, Student Ambassadors capitalized on every opportunity to meet with state and federal elected officials to vocalize their support for issues affecting kids.
Head Start Builds Bright Futures
In April, Student Ambassadors participated in SCAN’s week of action in support of Head Start and Early Head Start to educate the public about the importance of these federally-funded early learning programs. Their photos show they believe that Head Start builds bright futures!
Educate. Train. Activate. Repeat!
No student group would be successful if it weren’t for class presentations, club meetings and other opportunities to engage their fellow students! Our Student Ambassadors organized documentary screenings, trivia nights, panel discussions, advocacy workshops and more to train their club members and empower them to take advocacy actions for kids.
Just because school is out doesn’t mean that these students take a break! Our Student Ambassadors continue to be a voice for kids during the summer by leading outreach activities at music festivals and farmers’ markets, engaging candidates at town halls and debates, making phone calls to their members of Congress and more. They’ll be ready to hit the ground running come fall to recruit new students at their schools and start the semester off strong.
