Urge Congress to Oppose the Refugee Ban and Stop Cuts to Programs that Help Refugees

President Trump released a new executive order banning refugees from coming to America. The order uses different words to accomplish the same thing the Administration tried to do in January – close America’s doors to families fleeing violence and persecution.

President Trump also proposed massive cuts to the humanitarian assistance programs that help refugees like Amena* and her family rebuild their lives. Cutting funds for these vital programs when we are facing the biggest refugee crisis since World War II is cruel and inhumane. We are better than this.

I’m writing to express my concern about President Trump’s new executive order regarding refugees. The order uses different words to accomplish the same thing the Administration tried to do in January – close America’s doors to families fleeing violence and persecution. Welcoming refugees sends a strong message to groups that want to do us harm – the United States is still a leader for liberty in the world.
I’m also concerned about proposed cuts to the International Affairs budget which would further harm refugees, more than half of whom are children. More than 85% of the world’s refugees are in developing countries that have a limited ability to help them. U.S. humanitarian assistance funds helps refugees in these host countries so they can access basic needs and begin to rebuild their lives.
Humanitarian and development assistance programs build goodwill for the United States, helping to prevent conflict from spreading. Greater stability around the world means fewer threats at home. I believe investing in our nation’s soft power is a smart use of taxpayer dollars.
