Unfortunately, because of a lack of funding, less than 35% of eligible children don’t get a chance to attend Head Start. If Congress doesn't raise the budget caps they enacted a few years ago, even more kids miss out.

Subject: Raise the budget caps

Message:

I am writing to urge you raise the budget caps as you finalize the Fiscal Year 2018 budget.

I am concerned about the impact of these spending caps on critical programs that help low-income kids. Currently programs like Head Start don't come close to meeting the need of children living in poverty in our country. Less than 35% of eligible kids have access to Head Start. If Congress does not raise the budget caps this number will be even lower.

Quality early education makes a big difference in the lives of kids around the country. Head Start and other quality programs encourage literacy and early math and support emotional and social development. As a result, kids who have access to quality early education programs are more likely to graduate from high school and stay in the work force.

I'm also concerned about the impact of the budget caps on children around the world. In 2016, 5.6 million children aged 5 and under died from preventable and treatable causes, like pneumonia, malaria and diarrhea. American health and nutrition aid programs are working to help reduce the number of children who die from preventable causes.

If the budget caps aren't raised, I'm concerned that these critical kids' programs would face budget cuts. I urge you to support efforts to raise the budget caps and protect these programs for any spending cuts.
