WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 6, 2018) – Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) CEO Mark Shriver tonight congratulated Seattle voters for approving Proposition 1, the Families, Education, Preschool and Promise Levy, which will invest in education from cradle to career.

“This is a huge victory for kids,” Shriver said. “All kids deserve a strong start in life. By passing this initiative, voters assured that approximately 14,000 kids will get that strong start by being able to attend the Seattle Preschool Program over the next seven years.”

Shriver said that Seattle’s high-quality preschool program puts preschool in reach for low and middle-income families who otherwise might not have access.

“It’s a key component of closing the opportunity gap and ensuring that all children are ready for kindergarten,” he said. “Because of this vote, more of Seattle’s littlest learners will receive a high-quality early childhood education.”

In addition, Proposition 1 will also maintain critical support services for K-12 students and expand the Seattle Promise, which provides high school graduates with two years of free tuition at Seattle Colleges.

SCAN, a bipartisan organization that supports political candidates and initiatives that prioritize access to and investments in high-quality early childhood education, contributed $55,000 to campaign advocating for the passage of Proposition 1, making it the campaign’s largest single donor.

In addition, SCAN advocates generated hundreds of messages to Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and Seattle City Councilmembers, testified at City Council public hearings, called hundreds of Seattle voters and knocked on hundreds of doors, all in support of the preschool investments that were ultimately included in Proposition 1.
