Today, 65.6 million people are forcibly displaced from their homes by conflict and persecution. Sadly, millions of the displaced people are children. Opportunities to learn diminish greatly when children are forced to flee their homes. According to a new Save the Children report, refugee children are five times more likely to be out of school than non-refugee children. Moreover, only 50% of refugee children have access to primary education, compared with a global average of more than 90%.
Unfortunately, the gap only widens as these children become older. In times of displacement, education is crucial. We must ensure refugee children are able to attend school. Without the chance to study, an entire generation is at risk.
